Authorized dealer vs. grey market: what's the real difference

"Grey market" sounds shady. Mostly it isn't — it just means a different set of trade-offs than buying from an authorized dealer, and it's worth knowing which trade-off you're making.

What "authorized dealer" actually means

An authorized dealer is officially appointed by the brand to sell new watches, at the brand's set retail price, with the manufacturer's warranty starting the day you buy. For in-demand models, that often means a waitlist rather than walk-in availability.

What "grey market" actually means

A grey-market watch is a genuine watch — not a counterfeit — sold outside the brand's official retail network, often by another authorized dealer's excess stock or by an independent dealer. Grey-market pricing moves with real supply and demand, so it can land above or below official retail depending on how hyped the model is.

How to choose between them

Grey market usually means immediate availability and sometimes a better price, in exchange for doing your own diligence on authenticity and understanding exactly what warranty (if any) transfers with the watch. Authorized-dealer purchase means a wait, but the manufacturer's warranty and provenance are never in question. Neither option is inherently the "safe" one or the "risky" one — the safety comes from how carefully you verify the specific watch and the specific seller.
